How long does a court case really take in India?
The honest answer: it depends enormously on the type of case. We analysed domain-classified High Court case histories from 2000–2025 to see how long matters actually take — from filing to final decision.
The short answer
A typical criminal matter is resolved in about a month — but a motor-accident (MACT) claim takes nearly four years even at the median, and the slowest labour & service cases can drag on for 15 years. The average hides this. The type of case — and how unlucky you are in the queue — decides almost everything.

Why the average is misleading
If you ask “how long will my case take?” and someone quotes an average, be careful. In criminal matters the median is about a month, yet the slowest tenth still run past two years. In taxation and contempt matters the slow tail stretches beyond a decade. A single average would erase both the fast typical case and the punishing tail — which is exactly the uncertainty that makes litigation so stressful.
